Why Is My Almond Tree Not Producing Nuts?
Causes of almond trees flowering without nuts or not flowering: frost at bloom, poor pollination, lack of bees, rain, chill hours, age, pruning and nutrition.
Almond trees that bloom beautifully but produce few or no nuts usually have one of two problems: a frost during or just after bloom, or poor pollination, either because there is no compatible variety nearby or because cold, wet weather kept the bees away.
Common Causes
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Flowers, then nothing | Frost at bloom, no pollinizer, few bees, rain or wind during bloom |
| Tiny nuts drop in spring | Poor pollination, frost, water stress, boron deficiency |
| Few flowers | Too young, too little chill, shade, hard pruning, drought the previous summer |
| Nuts drop in summer | Drought, pests, disease |
Frost
Almonds bloom in late winter. Open flowers are killed at about −2 °C (28 °F) and young nuts at about −1 °C. Check a few flowers after a cold night: a black centre means the pistil is dead. Choose late-blooming varieties and avoid frost pockets.
Pollination
Most almonds are self-incompatible. Without a different variety blooming at the same time within about 30 m, they set almost no nuts. Even self-fertile varieties need bees to move pollen within the flower. Plant a compatible partner or a self-fertile variety, and encourage bees.
Age and Chill
Trees normally start bearing at 3–4 years. In very mild winters, varieties with high chill needs bloom poorly and unevenly.
Pruning, Water and Nutrition
- Heavy pruning removes fruiting spurs.
- Drought after harvest reduces next year's flower buds.
- Boron and zinc deficiencies reduce fruit set.
