Where Do Almonds Grow? Climate, Hardiness Zones and Soil
The climate almond trees need, chill hours, hardiness zones, late frost risk, soil and site choice, and where almonds are grown around the world.
Almonds grow best in a Mediterranean climate: mild, moderately cool winters and long, hot, dry summers. The world's largest producer by far is California's Central Valley, followed by Australia, Spain, Iran, Turkey, Morocco, Chile and Italy.
What Almonds Need
| Factor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Winter chill | About 200–500 hours below 7 °C (45 °F), depending on variety |
| Winter cold | Dormant trees tolerate about −15 to −20 °C |
| Spring | Frost-free and dry during bloom (late winter to early spring) |
| Summer | Long, hot and dry for kernel fill and hull split |
| Hardiness zones | USDA 7–9 (some varieties into 6 with luck) |
The Real Limit: Late Frost and Spring Rain
Almonds bloom before most fruit trees, often in February or March in the Northern Hemisphere. Flowers are damaged at about −2 °C (28 °F) and tiny nuts at about −1 °C. Cold, rainy weather during bloom also keeps bees in their hives and spreads blossom diseases. That is why almonds are unreliable in the UK, the Pacific Northwest and much of northern Europe, even though the trees themselves are hardy.
Soil
- Deep, well-drained loam or sandy loam is ideal.
- pH roughly 6.5–8; almonds tolerate lime better than many fruit trees.
- Waterlogging causes root and crown rot.
- Salinity reduces growth; almonds are moderately sensitive.
Choosing a Site
- Full sun.
- Slopes or higher ground where cold air drains away, not valley bottoms.
- Shelter from strong winds during bloom.
- Room for a pollinizer tree if your variety is not self-fertile.
Growing Almonds in Marginal Climates
- Pick late-blooming, self-fertile varieties.
- Plant against a warm wall and protect blossoms with fleece on frosty nights.
- Peach-almond hybrids such as 'Robijn' or 'Ingrid' have better resistance to peach leaf curl in wet climates.
