Why Is My Olive Tree Not Producing Olives?
The reasons an olive tree flowers but sets no fruit or does not flower at all: age, lack of winter chill, pollination, weather at bloom, pruning and alternate bearing.
An olive tree with no olives usually has one of three problems: it is too young, it did not get a cool winter, or the flowers failed because of weather or poor pollination. Heavy pruning and the natural "on/off" cycle of olives explain most of the rest.
Quick Diagnosis
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| No flowers at all | Too young, too warm in winter, too little light, over-pruning |
| Flowers but no fruit | Rain, wind, heat or frost at bloom; poor pollination; drought |
| Tiny olives that drop | Normal thinning, water stress, boron deficiency |
| Good crop one year, nothing the next | Alternate bearing |
1. The Tree Is Too Young
Trees from cuttings usually flower at 3–5 years; trees from seed can take 8–15 years. A nursery tree may need a couple of seasons after planting before it settles and flowers.
2. No Winter Chill
Olives form flower buds only after a period of cool weather, typically several weeks with nights below about 10 °C (50 °F). Potted olives kept in a warm house all winter, and trees in tropical climates, often never flower. Give potted trees a bright, cool, frost-free winter spot.
3. Not Enough Sun
Shaded trees and shaded inner branches do not flower. Olives need full sun, ideally 8 hours or more.
4. Weather at Flowering
Olives bloom in late spring. Rain washes away pollen, dry hot winds dry out the flowers, and late frost kills them. Only 1–2% of olive flowers normally become fruit, so a bad week at bloom can wipe out a crop.
5. Pollination
Some varieties (such as Leccino and many table olives) set little fruit without a second variety nearby. Even self-fertile varieties do better with a partner within about 30 m (100 ft).
6. Pruning
Olives fruit on last year's shoots. Hard pruning every year, or shaping an ornamental tree tightly, removes the wood that would have flowered.
7. Water and Nutrients
Drought at flowering and fruit set causes heavy flower and fruit drop. Too much nitrogen produces leaves instead of flowers. Boron deficiency causes poor fruit set.
8. Alternate Bearing
Olives naturally crop heavily one year and lightly the next. Regular light pruning, consistent watering and thinning a very heavy crop help even it out.
9. Fruitless Varieties
Some ornamental olives, such as 'Swan Hill' and 'Wilsonii', are bred to produce little or no fruit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my olive tree flower but not fruit?
Usually bad weather at bloom, poor pollination or drought; occasionally boron deficiency.
How can I make my olive tree produce fruit?
Full sun, a cool winter, light pruning, water at flowering and fruit set, and a second variety nearby.
Do indoor olive trees produce olives?
Rarely, unless they get a cool winter and very bright light.
How many years until an olive tree bears fruit?
Usually 3–5 years from a cutting or graft; 8–15 from seed.
