How Often to Water Lavender (in the Ground and in Pots)
Watering newly planted and established lavender, lavender in pots and indoors, summer and winter watering, and signs of overwatering and underwatering.
Lavender needs regular water only in its first growing season. After that, plants in the ground usually manage on rainfall and need a deep soak only in long, hot droughts. Potted lavender needs water when the top 3–5 cm (1–2 in) of soil are dry.
New Plants
- Water well at planting.
- First summer: once a week, deeply, if there is no rain; twice a week in heat waves for very sandy soil.
- Reduce in autumn.
Established Plants
Water every 2–3 weeks only during extended dry spells, letting the soil dry completely in between. In humid or rainy climates, established lavender may never need watering.
Lavender in Pots
| Season | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Summer | Every 3–7 days, when the top inch is dry |
| Spring and autumn | Every 1–2 weeks |
| Winter | Only when the mix is fully dry |
Overwatering Signs
- Yellow lower leaves.
- Grey, wilting foliage despite moist soil.
- Blackened stems at the base and a sour smell: root rot.
Underwatering Signs
New plants wilt and leaves become crisp; established plants rarely show drought damage except in pots.
